Having read the 1996 newsletter, I am pleased to say that Gap is still in Yangrima. However, not for much longer as we might be the last pair to be placed here. Actually we were only placed in Sermathang after our original placement in India fell through.
I am sure that I can speak for the vast majority of "Gappers", who have worked at Yangrima, when I say it has been both an enjoyable and invaluable experience. I feel that it would be a shame if Gap were to pull out of Yangrima. if this happens it should not mean the end of British volunteer involvement with Yangrima. I was therefore encouraged by the activities described in the 1996 newsletter and to Anthony Lunch I can only say, "Keep it up!"
My time in Sermathang has been very enjoyable despite the heavy rains of the monsoon season and now the colder nights of winter. The teaching has been fun. Although, my success in this endeavour will have to wait until after the December exams!
There can be little doubt that the Yangrima placement is unique, even in comparison with the other G.A.P. placements in Nepal. The 8 hour uphill trek to Sermathang (along with the hair raising Kathmandu to Melamchi bus ride!) and the fact that Yangrima is the only placement in a primarily Buddhist area help to create a unique and special experience.
Sermathang is truly wonderful place. I can only hope that other people like myself will have the opportunity to help Yangrima and the community while having a wonderful time themselves.
So as, the snow draws nearer. I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and all the best for 1998.
