School > The Festival of Lohsaar
Lohsaar is a very important and popular festival for the Hyolmu people. "Lohsaar" means New Year in the local language. This festival is celebrated for ten days during the last week of February.
On the first day of the festival, people place new white prayer flags in front of their houses. These prayer flags are replaced every year. The young people of the village wear a butter tika on their foreheads. The older people or the Lama of the village places the tika on the young people. The villagers wear their traditional dress throughout the festival.
People prepare many different types of food during the festival. Neighbours invite one another to their houses where they eat babar (which is like chapati). babar is made of rice flour, curry and khapse (khapse is made of wheat flour). The food is placed on a plate called a therker. After people have eaten, they sing and dance together.
