Helambu Information > Lifestyle of Hyolmo People

The people who live in Helambu are called ‘Hyolmo.’ Their life style is very different from others. They mainly eat dal bhat, dindo (a mashed floor of maize or millet), potato, radish, and other vegetables. They drink a special tea which is prepared from tea leaves, milk, salt and butter which is called ‘Tibetan tea.’ They wear bakhu, daura and surwali pants etc. Houses in this area are made up of stone, mud and covered with tin and stone. They keep their houses clean and decorated with many things. They use firewood for cooking.

Agriculture is the main occupation of the people living in this area. They grow potatoes, radishes, beans and some other vegetables. Some of them keep buffalos and cows for milk and compost. They work very hard. There is no transportation, so if they have to bring anything from another village or from Kathmandu they must carry it by themselves.

Most of the people are Buddhist. They celebrate the Losar Festival, which is the new year celebration, in the month of Magh. They also celebrate the Buddha Jayanti, Chhizu and Nara Festivals.
